HAMPTON COVE ALLIANCE
              Citizens Protecting Hampton Cove, Alabama

A quarry is proposed for the west side of Gurley Mountain, just three miles from Hampton Cove.  The quarry will be located on land owned by John Hays, the original developer of Hampton Cove.  Possible threats to Hampton Cove homeowners include the following:

  - Possibly reduced property values (up to 5% - 15%, or even more)

  - 12 hour per day blasting, five days per week, 50 weeks per year, audible up to 5 miles              away

  - Limestone dust, especially dangerous for asthmatics and allergy sufferers

  - Heavy truck traffic on our bypass, damaging our road (and our tires)

  - Cracking foundations

  - Water pollution of the Flint River and Hurricane Creek (an already endangered waterway)

  - Unknown ecological damage to the Highland Rim area

  - Ugly scarring of beautiful Gurley Mountain

It's not too late to stop these threats!

But we need your help!  The Hampton Cove Alliance has been formed to oppose this quarry before permits allow it to operate.  Currently, our primary focus is to enlist the aid of our elected officials. We are asking for new legislation to be introduced which will outlaw new quarries if located within two miles of a school.

There are many other ways you can help:

1.  Write to your state (not federal) senator listed on this website to ask them to sponsor and/or support legislation, which would put a stop to the quarry.  The more requests they get, the more serious they will be about helping us. The house has passed a bill in 2008 that would outlaw this quarry, but the bill died when it failed to pass in the Alabama Senate (it was blocked in committee).

2.  Write an editorial for the Huntsville Times, or any other local paper of your choice.

3.  Display our bumper sticker proudly on your vehicle - this will help get the word out.  Contact a Team Leader below to get these easily removeable stickers.

4.  Are you an expert on local endangered species such as the federally protected gray bat?  Please call us, as the quarry will be located near a large gray bat colony.

(refers to quarries in Alabama)

Congratulations to Parker Griffith, who was elected November 4, 2008 to the U.S. House of Representatives.  Parker Griffith has always supported our efforts to stop the Gurley quarry and we appreciate him.

Other positive news: quarry permit applications have expired, and have not yet been renewed.
NEWS!
